Indicator Uptake and Reporting for Targets 5 and 9

Countries that are party to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will be meeting in Nairobi this week. A number of SULi members will be attending including SULi Chair, Dilys Roe who will be participating in a side event to launch the work of the IUCN-led IN-WILD project (IN-WILD: Revolutionising Indicators for Wildlife Use and Trade Monitoring using Social Media and Integrated Global Wildlife Data Systems - project | IUCN).

IN-WILD is a GEF-funded project intended to revolutionise how wildlife use and trade are monitored and develop new indicators to support Targets 5 and 9 of the Global Biodiversity Framework(GBF) – both of which focus on the sustainable use of wild species.  

As a contribution to the project, and inspired by the review of progress of implementation of the GBF, a new SULi briefing paper [https://www.iucnsuli.org/resources/monitoring-the-sustainability-of-wild-species-use] explores which indicators CBD Parties have chosen to monitor their progress against Targets 5 and 9, and which ones they have reported against.

The Briefing is supported by a new interactive dashboard [https://indicatordashboardt5t9.shinyapps.io/indicator_dashboard/] that enables users to explore indicator uptake and reporting on a country-by-country basis. The research for the Briefing and the development of the dashboard were carried out by SULi student member Henry Lethbridge, a recent graduate from Cardiff University. Congratulations to Henry for an excellent piece of work and an informative and useful product which we will continue to add to, as more countries report progress.
